The five best translation plugins for WordPress (free and paid)

Do you need to translate your WordPress site? Check out our list of the best translation plugins, both paid and free.

If you're running a WordPress site that's in more than one language, then you absolutely need a translation plugin to ensure that your content is properly translated and accessible to all of your users. Translation plugins offer an easy way to offer your website in different languages.

There are dozens of great translation plugins available for WordPress, both paid and free. So which one should you choose? To help you make the best decision for your website, we've compiled a list of the (in our opinion) five best translation plugins for WordPress.

Jetpack

Jetpack is a popular plugin for WordPress that includes many features, one of which is translation. Jetpack's translation feature can automatically translate your website into over 30 languages.

One of the main pros of using Jetpack for translations is that it's free. Not only that, but it's also very easy to use – you simply need to install the plugin and then activate the Google Translate Widget. After that, your website will be automatically translated into the chosen language(s).

However, there are also some drawbacks to using Jetpack for translations. One issue is that not all themes and plugins are compatible with automatic translation – so if you're running a complex website, you might find that some parts of your site aren't properly translated. Additionally, automatic translations can sometimes result in inaccuracies and strange-sounding text as it relies on Google Translate (although this is often due to factors such as idioms and slang).

One major problem with using the Jetpack translation feature is that you can't edit the translations and the translated content will also not be indexed by search engines. This makes this feature therefore not much better than directly relying on in-browser translations offered by modern browsers.

If you're looking for an easy-to-use and affordable solution for translating your WordPress site, then Jetpack's Translation module could be a good option for you. However, if you're running a complex website or one where accuracy is critical, then you might want to consider other solutions on this list.

WPML

If you're looking for a powerful, professional translation solution for your WordPress site, then WPML is worth considering. It's one of the most popular translation plugins available, used on over 700,000 websites.

WPML offers many features that make it ideal for translating complex WordPress sites. It can automatically translate your content or you can use its professional translation services to get your content translated by human translators.

Another great feature of WPML is that it lets you manage different versions of your website in different languages – so you can have a French version of your blog posts and an English version of your product pages, for example. This makes it very easy to keep track of everything and ensure that each piece of content is properly translated.

One downside to using WPML is that it's not free – pricing starts at $39 per year (though you would want at least the $99 version). However, this price does include 1 year of support and updates.

Considering the wealth of features offered by WPML, we think this plugin provides excellent value for money. You should however note that WPML is just compatible with WordPress and you may lose all translations if you ever want to migrate your website to another technology.

TranslatePress for WordPress

TranslatePress is a newer premium WordPress translation plugin that's quickly becoming popular due to its user-friendly interface and comprehensive features.

TranslatePress offers both automatic machine translations and professional human translations, depending on your needs and budget. It also includes features such as SEO-friendly URLs, support for custom post types and WooCommerce, and the ability to translate any string on your website (not just posts and pages).

Pricing for TranslatePress starts at 89 Euro per year but it does include 1 year of free updates and support. This makes it slightly more expensive than WPML but considering the additional features offered by TranslateExpress, we think it's still good value for money. The main downside of using this plugin is the same as with WPML – you're locked into using WordPress if you ever want to change platforms in the future.

Polylang

Polylang is a popular free WordPress translation plugin that's available in over 50 languages. It offers features such as automatic translations, support for custom post types and WooCommerce, and the ability to translate any string on your website (not just posts and pages).

One of the main pros of using Polylang is that it's free – which makes it a great option if you're on a budget. We found that Polylang has a more complicated user interface than the other options on this list, so be aware that there may be additional training required.

Dilingual

Dilingual is a free translation service that's compatible with all major content management systems (CMS) and has no vendor lock-in. This means that you're not tied to using WordPress if you ever want to change platforms in the future.

Another great thing about Dilingual is that it offers automatic machine translations as well as human translations, so you can choose the option that best suits your needs and budget. Additionally, Dilingual includes features such as SEO-friendly URLs and support for custom post types – making it a very comprehensive solution for translating your website.

The only downside of using Dilingual is that it's not available in as many languages as some of the other options on this list. However, Dilingual does offer support for over 100 different language pairs – so chances are that it covers the languages you need.

Which translation plugin is right for you?

After considering all of the options on this list, we believe that Dilingual is the best translation solution for WordPress. It's a comprehensive and affordable solution that offers both automatic machine translations and human translations – meaning that you can choose the option that best suits your needs. Additionally, it has no vendor lock-in so you're not tied to using WordPress in the future.
